9.1.4 Mentoring programmes

Mentoring programmes offer a great possibility to settle into university life and the academic world through the assistance of experienced students and tutors.

Fachmentorenprogramm FAMOS (Faculty Mentoring Programme)

For international students who want to complete their entire degree at the HU, the Fachmentorenprogramm FAMOS offers the right orientation programme.  The programme’s objective is to individually accompany students during their studies through professional, linguistic and cultural integration. Currently, the programme is offered at the four Faculties of Arts and Humanities and the Faculty of Law, while plans of extending the project step by step to all other faculties are already made.

Through FAMOS, international students can receive ample support from their respective department. On the one hand, specifically trained student mentors are available to assist with settling into university routine and help new students to integrate into the new cultural environment. On the other hand, academic mentors find solutions in case of study-related problems and try to make students familiar with scientific and critical work. Aside from specific guidance, the programme also includes intercultural workshops and activities.

Information about the programme and registration before the start of the semester can be found online.

This includes general guidance through the new city, information on finding accommodation, insights into university and Berlin life, tips about student canteens and libraries as well as study-related support with timetables, essays and much more.  "Berlin Perspectives" mentoring programme

A newly established mentoring programme is part of the international study programme “Berlin Perspectives” (► 7.1) The concept of “Berlin Perspectives” links German language courses with module courses taught in English, in order to help new international students to quickly get accustomed to cultural and academic life at Humboldt-Universität. Therefore, the mentoring programme offers the mentees a continuing and reliable supervision from experienced mentors, who – together with the international students – participate in weekly meetings and intercultural events. You can register for “Berlin Perspectives” through the bologna.lab.

Occasionally, single faculties and Fachschaften (student committees in the faculties ► 9.1.1) offer mentoring programmes for new students as well. It is worth a try to inquire directly at your faculty or department.
