9.13 Travel

The next few sections will give you a number of ideas for opportunities to travel, both within Germany and from Germany to other countries. It is advisable to compare several offers before deciding. It is also true to say that the earlier you book, the more attractive are the prices. The most inexpensive accommodation offered is provided by youth hostels (DJH) and backpacker hostels. CouchSurfing is a world-wide hospitality exchange network and website. After free registration, members have the option of finding and offering sleeping accommodation.

Railway

All kinds of information on anything to do with railway travel in Germany and abroad including special offers are provided by the Deutsche Bahn.

An alternative to DB (Deutsche Bahn) is InterConnex. InterConnex trains run every day on a route between Leipzig-Berlin-Rostock-Warnemünde.

Air travel

A quick and inexpensive way to cover larger distances from Berlin is provided by air travel. There are many airlines offering reduced rate flights. Since there is frequently only a limited contingent of seats sold at cheap rates it is advisable to book as early as possible.

When comparing prices it is important to check carefully whether an airline applies additional taxes and airport landing fees.

Long-distance bus services

For travelling longer distances on the ground there is, of course, the opportunity to go to many cities in Germany and Europe on long-distance buses at reasonable prices.

Car sharing centres

An inexpensive alternative to travelling by bus, train or plane is offered by the car sharing centres (Mitfahrzentralen) of which many operate in Berlin. The idea is to ride as a passenger in a car with someone else. From Berlin to other cities in Germany there is always a good chance to find a lift at short notice. Sharing the cost of gasoline/petrol is usually a condition for sharing a car journey.

A database that offers nation-wide “Mitfahrgelegenheiten” (car-sharing offers) can be found at:

www.mitfahrgelegenheit.de

The actual price of the journey should be agreed on with the driver of the car before setting out. The car sharing centres give information about the maximum price a driver can demand. One Berlin based car sharing centre:
