KOSMOS Workshops

KOSMOS supports joint workshops organized by HU researchers in cooperation with international partners

The KOSMOS Programme is a key element in the internationalisation of research and teaching at Humboldt-Universität, as part of its strategy “Bildung durch Wissenschaft. Educating Enquiring Minds: Individuality - Openess - Guidance”. The programme draws upon the tradition of Alexander von Humboldt’s “Lectures on Physical Geography” - known as the KOSMOS Lectures.

The programme was developed as a tool for building and strengthening international partnerships. A KOSMOS Workshop gives members of Humboldt-Universität the opportunity to exchange ideas with international partners, to discuss current research topics, and to determine new perspectives and approaches for future collaborations.

The workshops (up to five days), which receive funding of 5.000 to 8.000 EUR each, result in joint research projects, applications for third-party funding, or publications. The active participation of young researchers and teachers - as well as advanced master's students - is an explicit funding objective.

Funding recommendations are made by an interdisciplinary selection panel:

  • Prof. Dr. Oliver Benson, Department of Physics
  • Prof. Dr. Tobia Lakes, Geography Department
  • Dr. Henrik Lebuhn, Department of Social Sciences
  • Prof. Dr. Ethel Matala de Mazza, Department of German Literature
  • Prof. Dr. Gesa Stedman, Centre for British Studies

In the past, funding was also available for KOSMOS Summer Universities (2013 – 2017) and KOSMOS Dialogues (2014 – 2017).
