Support for international doctoral students

Services of the Humboldt Graduate School

The Humboldt Graduate School offers its member doctoral programs and all doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität a comprehensive range of interdisciplinary and supportive services as well as information for doctoral students with family responsibilties.

DAAD STIBET doctoral students' programme

DAAD funding from the Federal Foreign Office has enabled us to offer a combined scholarship and support programme for international doctoral students at Humboldt University (HU).

Start-up support after your arrival

The International Scholar Services support you with regard to non-academic queries throughout your research visit, for example apartment hunting, dealing with local authorities as well as residence permit applications. In addition to our regular consultation hours, we also offer an accompanying service for appointments at the local authorities, which means an experienced student assistant can support you individually in order to overcome language barriers, for example.

Welcome reception at the beginning of the semester

Once a year the International Scholar Services hold a central welcome event for international doctoral students, scholars and their HU hosts, on behalf of the HU president Professor Sabine Kunst.

Events and activities

Our start-up events during the semester help new arrivals to orientate themselves within Humboldt University and offer information about where they can get further advice and help. Talks and presentations on specific issues (e.g. tax declarations, social insurance, etc.) support international students to find their way through the bureaucratic jungle in a foreign country.

Different cultural activities give doctoral candidates the chance to find out more about the history and culture of Berlin, and to get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere.

Scholarships for particularly engaged doctoral students

Scholarships will be awarded to particularly engaged international HU doctoral candidates who involve themselves with the support and integration of other international doctoral students.

+++ Calls for proposals will be published here +++

Completion scholarship for international doctoral students

The DAAD funding enables the award of scholarships, which ensure the successful completion of graduation in cases where there is a lack of financial resources. All international doctoral candidates who are in the final stage of their thesis are eligible. The scholarships are usually awarded for 3-5 months.
