Offers for refugee researchers at HU

Refugee researchers – or researchers at risk in their countries of origin – who turn to Humboldt-Universität will, where possible, be offered individual counselling that is quick and non-bureaucratic regarding opportunities to make connections with people in similar fields, funding opportunities and, potentially, their career prospects at Humboldt-Universität.

Philipp Schwartz Initiative

The Philipp Schwartz Initiative was launched by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation together with the Federal Foreign Office in 2016. It allows universities and non-university research institutes in Germany to host at-risk researchers, who are threatened or had to flee from their home countries, for 24 months.

HU and "Scholars at Risk"

Since June 2017, the HU is a member of the “Scholars at Risk” (SAR) network, which unites over 500 academic institutions from 39 countries to provide support to vulnerable scientists worldwide. The key objectives of the network include improving the visibility of the needs of at-risk researchers from around the globe and strengthening academic freedom.

As members of this network, HU researchers and students can participate in any of the following activities: organization of joint events with other academics from the SAR network as part of the SAR Speaker Series; support for incarcerated researchers by means of student advocacy seminars and campaigns; participation in the Academic Freedom Monitoring Project; attendance at SAR conferences and workshops.

Einstein Guest Professorships and Einstein Junior Scholarships

The Einstein Foundation is committed to fostering academic freedom and international collaboration. Two special programmes (Einstein Guest Professorships and Einstein Junior Scholarships) are offered temporary in order to reach this objective and to enable researchers who are experiencing constraints in their work around the world to come to Berlin for two years to pursue their research without undue restrictions or threats.

Participating in DFG projects

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) offers refugee researchers at various levels of academic qualification the opportunity to participate in on-going DFG projects: Claims for additional staff may be made for research projects already funded by DFG, thus allowing for the involvement of refugee researchers.

Additional funding from the Volkswagen Foundation

The Volkswagen Foundation (VolkswagenStiftung) also offers the opportunity to apply for additional funding for the purposes of supporting refugee researchers: Researchers already receiving funding from the Volkswagen Foundation can claim additional funding of up to €200,000 in order to integrate refugee researchers into their on-going research project.
