Integrative Research Institute on Transformations of Human-Environment Systems

IRI THESys (Foto: Matthias Heyde)Scientists at IRI THESys are interested in research for global sustainability and focus on, e.g., urbanization processes in the 21st century, sustainable use of land and its resources, adaptation to climate change impacts, or inter- and intra-generational justice. This research is per se international and requires international and interdisciplinary research groups. Currently, more than half of the research staff has an international background. At an institutional level, IRI THESys collaborates closely with regional partners such as the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impacts Research and other Leibnitz Institutes or with international colleagues, e.g., from the Institute of Social Ecology in Vienna, Austria, or the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, which are both involved in organizing the 2014 KOSMOS Summer University. THESys members act as committee members for the German committee for the FutureEarth initiative, the Global Land Project or other initiatives committed to research for global sustainability.
