Profile Partnership Universidade de São Paulo

HU and USP follow a joint vision

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) and Universidade de São Paulo (USP) decided to take the cooperation between the universities to a new level in October 2015 and signed the contract for a strategic partnership. As profile partners, both institutions are investing more in bilateral cutting-edge research and will, in the process, be able to build upon their reliable contacts and many years of experience gleaned during diverse collaboration projects. Among the existing joint research there is a wide range of topics regarding key global issues of our age, such as metropolitan, migration, and climate research. These are subjects which complement each other particularly well in the German-Brazilian dialogue. The Presidents, Prof. Dr. Marco Antonio Zago and Prof. Dr. Jan-Hendrik Olbertz, as well as academics from both universities thus met in April 2015 in São Paulo during Conferencia USP, which concerned “Dasafíos da Globalidade” (“The Challenges of Globalisation”) in order to form a closer strategical relationship in the sector of “Megacidades” (megacities). Both HU, situated in the innovative hub of Europe and integrated into a huge network of university and non-university institutions, and USP, in the heart of Latin America’s academic and economic centre, can benefit from their central locations and the fact that they are perfectly incorporated into the local infrastructure.

Bilateral profiling with particular advantages

“Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is our point of reference in Germany,” stated Prof. Dr. Raul Machado Neto, Provost for International Collaborations at USP. He also drew attention to the many similarities between the partner institutions. As part of the strategic partnership, cutting-edge research, promotion of researchers, governance exchange, and staff mobility are at the focus of the joint profiling. Furthermore, both universities are offering an expanded quota of ten exchange study places annually for bachelor and master’s students, as well as a range of joint initiatives.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is expanding the domain of “research-based learning” together with its strategic partner the University of São Paulo (USP) in order to make the achievements of young student researchers more visible on the international stage. For the third year in a row, five grants will be made available for students to attend the USP International Symposium of Undergraduate Research (SIICUSP) in São Paulo, Brazil. Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin will thereby enable outstanding students to present their thesis at a prestigious, international symposium and make cross-border contacts with peers and experts in the field. Participation in the symposium will be supplemented by preparatory activities before departure to increase intercultural awareness, a specially tailored accompanying programme on location and individual guidance for how to continue building the student’s research network and developing research perspectives after the trip.
