European university alliance to gain new members

Circle U. will be joined by Università di Pisa and Universität Wien

The European university network Circle U. is growing. With the universities of Pisa and Vienna joining, opportunities for studying and doing research in Europe are bound to increase.

On Friday, 12 November 2021, the European university alliance Circle U.’s general assembly voted unanimously in favour of accepting two new members. The University of Pisa and the University of Vienna will officially join the alliance on 28 January 2022. With these new additions, Circle U. will gain strong partners is the South and South-East, increase its regional diversity and create new opportunities for education, research and professional development in Europe.

The universities of Vienna and Pisa, founded in 1365 and 1343 respectively, are among the continent’s oldest universities and share Circle U.’s goal to combine excellent teaching, research and socially relevant innovation. In line with the alliance, they also promote inclusion and diversity. Already, a third of students at the University of Vienna are internationals, while the University of Pisa is making great strides in opening all their programmes for international students and researchers.

The President's Executive Council of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin applauds the decision made by Circle U.’s general assembly: “We are proud that this project, which a year ago was co-founded by Humboldt-Universität, is now gaining two more distinguished partner universities”, says president Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. Sabine Kunst. “With the extension of Circle U. to include the universities of Vienna and Pisa, we are getting an important step closer to our joint goal of innovative, research-oriented teaching on a European level.”

Yoan Vilain, President’s Representative for International and European Affairs at HU, has led the negotiations with both new members. He is confident they will be an easy fit: “From the very first discussions with Universität Wien and Università di Pisa, we felt a strong commitment to Circle U. We are looking forward to their contributions to the current projects but also to the next call for the European university alliances.”
