Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin among the top 50 universities worldwide

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) makes a great leap forward: The current reputation ranking published by the UK magazine Times Higher Education (THE) puts HU in 41st spot, making it one of the top 50 universities worldwide. This highlights a significant improvement for HU compared to last year's ranking. In 2014, the university featured in the list's 71-80 band.

Commenting on the excellent ranking, Jan-Hendrik Olbertz, president of the HU, said: "Our achievement in the Education World Reputation Ranking is the tangible product of our commitment to our institutional strategy, 'Educating Enquiring Minds. Individuality - Openness - Guidance', through which we offer everyone at HU the best possible opportunities for development. The fact that the resulting high-level research performance has been honoured in THE Reputation Ranking is a very welcome bonus of our initiatives."

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is the third highest ranked university in Germany. The highest ranked institution is Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, which came in 35th, followed by Universität Heidelberg at 38. Germany now has six universities represented in the top 100. This is the third highest representation in the performance list behind the US and the UK.

The current Education World Reputation Ranking is a subsidiary of the annual THE World University Ranking and is based on the results of a survey carried out with over 10,000 academics from 142 countries. Those surveyed can name up to ten universities worldwide which they believe to be the best in their specific subject discipline, based on their own experience. Therefore, the survey does rank objective criteria, but looks simply at the reputation of an institution for research and teaching.
