Program description

This call for applications for scholarships is made in cooperation with the language center at HU. This program emphasizes funding of language courses for the following languages, due to their relevance to the university: Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Swahili and Hausa. For these languages applicants should have completed a minimum of A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), except for Spanish and French: here minimum of a B1 level (CEFR) is required. The language course should be a fundamental part of the study program at HU or it should be of relevant support to the study program’s contents (please explain in your motivation letter).

Applicants can attend language courses at a private or state university. The course must last 3 weeks minimum and be comprised of at least 25 hours per week. Applicants are responsible for the organization and registration of their stay.

The amount of the travel allowance depends on the country of destination. For PROMOS funding rates, please check the table below on this page. The amount of the course fee is covered with 500 Euros for each country.

Application details

Students and PhD candidates from all subjects can apply who are matriculated at HU can apply.

In case the stay abroad overlaps the two mobility periods, please always apply for the period in which your stay begins. 

The PROMOS scholarship cannot be combined with other scholarships financed by German public funds (e. g. DAAD or ERASMUS). The Deutschlandstipendium and the PROMOS scholarship can be received simultaneously. In case of the Auslands-BAföG special rules apply.

After the stay students must submit an experience report.

  • Curriculum Vitae 
  • Letter of motivation (1-2 pages)
    • describing in what way the language course contributes to your studies
  • Transcript of records
    • stamped and signed by the examination office, displaying your current average grade 
  • Copy of university diplomas
    • ​in case you already completed other studies (B.A./B.Sc. diploma)
  • Proof of adequate language skills (for the host university’s language of instruction)
  • Proof of course registration
  • Copy of your passport
