The strategic partnership between the University of Zurich and Humboldt-Universität was launched in 2019 to address challenges in Europe and the world together through intensive, scientific exchange.

Founded in 1833 in Switzerland and 1810 in Germany, both universities have a long history and pool diverse research skills. As two of the leading universities in Switzerland and Germany, it is our common goal to pool our academic expertise. The focal points of our collaboration lie in the area of health sciences, climate research, cultural studies and interdisciplinary projects between the natural sciences and humanities.

As part of our partnership with the University of Zurich (UZH), we promote research projects that strengthen the European scientific dialogue. Small, medium-sized and large projects across national borders and disciplines are funded that open up new perspectives on our scientific collaborations with Switzerland and in the rest of the world.

The calls for proposal are made by the University of Zurich. If the cooperation projects are approved, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin provides co-financing. The UZH Global Strategy and Strategic Funding Scheme comprises three funding lines:

  1. Using the Travel Fund, individual UZH researchers and staff can apply for up to 1,200 CHF to establish first contacts with partners such as HU. Depending on the available budget, applications can be made continuously, but must be submitted to UZH at least four weeks prior to departure.
  2. The Seed Fund makes it possible to explore joint ideas in groups and offers up to 5,000 CHF per initiative from UZH. There is the possibility of using matching funds from HU. Applications can be submitted once a year (from around August).
  3. The Project Fund is to be used to deepen existing formats of the collaboration with a potentially high impact. Applicants can request up to 60,000 CHF per initiative from UZH, whereby the confirmation of matching funds from HU is a prerequisite for funding from UZH. Applications can be submitted once a year (from around August).

A further possibility of funding is offered by the Swiss European Mobility Program (SEMP). It gives European students and doctoral students the opportunity to study, complete internships or carry out research activities at Swiss universities. At the same time, the programme enables students and doctoral students at Swiss universities to participate in study visits, internships or research visits in Europe. Do you wish to develop a new cooperation project with the University of Zurich or to expand existing structures? The International University Collaborations Office offers a Zoom consultation once a month for initiating collaborations with UZH and other strategic partners of Humboldt-Universität. Come and visit us

The first Thursday of every month from 10.00 am – 11.00 am.

As part of Berlin Science Week 2022, the panel discussion “Water as an elixir of life” focused on the impact of our use of water on biodiversity. The international cooperation project between the University of Zurich and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin brought together scientists and experts from both cities. The discussion focused on the challenges and opportunities in the use of water bodies that serve as a water supply, a habitat for plants and animals and a recreation area in Berlin and Zurich.
