Erasmus+ for social participation, inclusion and diversity
Do you want to explore the world and are faced with individual hurdles? Maybe you have a disability or care responsibilities? Maybe you’re not from an academic family or are working alongside your studies? Erasmus+ can offer additional funding!
To ensure as many people as possible can have international exchange experiences, Erasmus+ promotes social participation and equal opportunities. In doing so, the programme, supported by the European Commission, addresses social challenges and advocates for European values. To this end, the following concrete measures are in place:
- more open, flexible advice and support formats
- more diverse and flexible forms of mobility – such as short-term stays, virtual and hybrid mobility, as well as support for group programmes
- additional financial support opportunities
On this page, you can find out more about what support options1 are available for you. The target groups of the additional funding are people with disabilities (degree of disability of at least 20%) or chronic illnesses, people with children, as well as people from non-academic backgrounds and working students.
More detailed explanations of funding conditions, applications and processes can be found on the pages for students (study stays and internships) and for employees (teaching stays as well as further training). On the website of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), you can also find an overview of the support available and detailed information on the funding criteria.
If you, as a student, belong to at least one of the groups of people mentioned, you are entitled to apply for an additional fixed subsidy, a so-called “social top-up”, for your Erasmus+ stay.
For long-term stays of 60 to 360 days, the top-up is 250 euros per month. It must be applied for alongside regular Erasmus+ funding. You will automatically receive the corresponding form with the Erasmus+ documents. Fulfilment of the funding criteria must usually be demonstrated by a sworn declaration, and sometimes also by additional evidence.
For short-term stays, you can receive a one-time top-up. For stays lasting between 5 and 14 days, the additional funding is 100 euros; for stays of 15 to 30 days, you can apply for an additional 150 euros.
If you take part in the Erasmus+ programme with children, you can also apply for funding to cover the additional costs that actually arise. This is recommended if the additional costs incurred abroad cannot be offset by the top-up.

- ... is a maximum of 15,000 euros per stay abroad for teaching and training stays.
The amounts mentioned apply regardless of the number of children being cared for. You can apply for funding through your contact in the International Department. We recommend scheduling a personal consultation so we can support you every step of the way. Your application will be checked by the International Department and then forwarded to the DAAD for assessment.
Please note: It may take over two months to process your application. Please apply for additional funding well in advanced of your stay abroad!
