Semesters abroad in Eastern Europe

Your preferred university or country is not covered by the Erasmus+ programme? As an HU student, you also have the opportunity to spend one or two semesters abroad at one of our 3 partner universities in Eastern Europe. Through corresponding university contracts, your tuition fees will be waived, meaning that your studies are free of charge or that you only incur administrative fees. Below you can read which requirements apply, what the processes for applying and transferring credits look like, and what our Eastern European partner universities have to offer. We would also be happy to advise you personally – you can find our services at the end of this page.

The application deadlines for all subjects are:

31 January for the winter semester (classes start in September/October). The application portal is open from 1 to 31 January (11:59 p.m).

15 June for the summer semester (classes start in February). The application portal is open from 15 May to 15 June (11:59 p.m.).

To apply for a semester abroad, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You are currently enrolled.
  • You have completed at least two semesters of your Bachelor's degree programme or are currently studying for in a Master's degree programme
  • You apply at the level of study (Bachelor or Master) for which you are currently enrolled at Humboldt-Universität.
  • You can provide evidence of the foreign language skills required by the host university (see the “Language requirements” section below).
  • Your subject is offered at the partner university and is open to exchange students.

Please note: Medical students should contact their faculty directly. In exceptional cases, applications from law students can be accepted following a personal consultation with our team. Please contact us if you have any questions.

To apply, you must demonstrate at least the language proficiency level B2 for the language in which you would like to study. For Russian and English, you can have a DAAD language certificate issued at the HU Language Centre for a fee of 20 euros. We also accept all standardised language certificates such as TOEFL/IELTS (English) or TRKI (Russian). High school and Abitur certificates are not sufficient as proof of language proficiency. Please note: Proof of language proficiency must be submitted by the application deadline.

The academic year at our Eastern European partner universities is divided into two semesters. In Armenia and Azerbaijan, the winter semester runs from early September until late January, and the summer semester from early February until late May.

We are delighted that you're interested in a semester abroad. The application process for all regions begins with the timely submission of your application via Humboldt-Universität application portal by the specified application deadline.

You have the option of applying to three partner universities in Eastern Europe at the same time – if you do, please indicate your order of priority.

If your application is also successful at this stage, we nominate you to the partner university. You also subsequently submit an application to the partner university. Only after your documents have been checked successfully by the partner university do you receive the final admission for your semester abroad. If you are successfully admitted, you will receive all relevant information for your upcoming semester abroad from the partner university.

The recognition of credits earned abroad is carried out in consultation with your faculty or institute. Please consult with them before submitting your documents for the final application deadline for an exchange place. The HU grade converter also offers initial guidance regarding the conversion of foreign university grades into the German grading system. The calculated results are non-binding. If you have any questions or comments, please contact the HU Examination Service.
