Financial Aid

We are currently working on a stipend that would support participating students during their research stay in Berlin (TBD). Further financial aid opportunities need to be discussed with sending institution.

Academic Content

Students will conduct academic research under the guidance of faculty, and researchers at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

The program will also include cultural activities as well as courses (German language/history/culture) where students will be able to receive academic credits (please see details under "credits” below).

A detailed program structure will follow soon!

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrolled student (advanced BA (3rd or 4th year)), Master or PhD) at one of our partner institutions (see list above)
  • Prior laboratory experience (academic or otherwise) that qualifies candidate for the desired project
  • Excellent fluency in English language; German skills of advantage but not necessary
  • Strong academic record (minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent); demonstrated preparation for desired lab project
  • Possibly more as noted in the project descriptions

Humboldt Internship Program will assist admitted students in finding accommodation in student dorms reserved for the program.

However, should university-arranged accommodation not be available, students will be responsible for securing their own accommodation with our assistance.

The program will offer academic courses (German language/history/culture) and participants will be able to receive academic credits after successful completion of these courses. The amount of credits students will be able to receive still needs to be determined

Approved students will be enrolled as students of Humboldt Universität zu Berlin during their stay. They will need to pay a one-time semester fee of approximately 300 € upon arrival. This is not a tuition fee, but a contribution towards the city-wide semester ticket (for free public transportation), social facilities and other benefits (budget-priced meals in the canteens, for instance).

Visa Application

Depending on where a student comes from, a visa may be required to enter Germany. The visa should be applied for as early as possible because it often takes a while to be processed. Directly after getting the admission letter from the Humboldt Internship-Programm (after January 17, 2020), students need to work on the visa application for Germany.

The Humboldt Internship-Programm will provide more country-specific information on visa requirements and application as we are moving closer to the date.

Health Insurance

Partner universities might provide and request a travel insurance (TBD with partner institution). However, since students will be enrolled at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, they are required to receive public health insurance through one of the public health insurance providers. The monthly costs are approx. €80.

An alternative might be to buy a private health insurance for approx. €50. Humboldt Internship Program can offer appropriate consultation upon acceptance in the program.
