6.2.2 Seminars | Seminare

In seminars, students and lecturers jointly elaborate on subject matter to be acquired. Many universities distinguish between proseminars (Proseminare), principal seminars (Hauptseminare), master seminars (Masterseminare) and advanced seminars (Oberseminare).

During the seminars, students are expected to acquire basic academic knowledge and the methodology of academic work by dealing with selected topics. Hauptseminare (HS) are intended for senior students as an introduction to working independently in an academic setting on a fairly broad subject basis.

It is quite common for students to give presentations in seminars, which are subsequently discussed.

More detailed descriptions of university teaching formats available, as well as their categorisation as basic or advanced study sections are to be found on AGNES and in the annotated lecture catalogue (6.1.1).
