9.2.1 Out and about in Berlin with the semester ticket

Since 2003 the purchase of a semester ticket for public transport in Berlin and the surrounding area has been mandatory for all students of Humboldt-Universität. Students are required to pay for the ticket when they register or renew their registration (► 5.1.4). After payment of all fees and dues for the new semester students will receive the student ID card.

The student ID card is generally recognised as a valid Semester Ticket on public transport in connection with the student's personal ID card or passport. The semester ticket can be used in the ABC local transport zones operated by the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Consortium (VBB) for an unlimited number of journeys. In addition, a passenger may take along children up to the age of six, luggage, a dog, a baby buggy or pram and a bicycle without any additional charge.

Semester tickets must not be laminated!

Students are entitled to apply for a subsidy towards the cost of the semester ticket. In some cases, the subsidy may cover up to 100% of the cost. Students who have been reimbursed in full may apply to the Humboldt Language Centre to have the tuition fees for language courses they wish to attend waived.
