Finding accommodation in Berlin is everything but easy. The housing situation in Germany’s capital city got significantly worse in recent years – demand is consistently growing and consequently there are ever fewer affordable rooms available. The growing demand for rooms and the significant increase in rental prices makes it very difficult for students to find a flat in Berlin.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is trying to assist as many students as possible in finding accommodation by allocating them to selected student dormitories in Berlin.

We are offering accommodation primarily to exchange students, who are absolving a semester abroad at our university. In case of vacancies, German and International degree-seeking students can also apply for student accommodation by contacting our International Office. Students can choose between the following accommodation options

Please note that exchange students cannot apply directly at the Studentenwerk Berlin. Applications for accommodation can only be submitted to the International Office. Exchange students can only be accommodated in one of the above listed dormitories.

How to apply for student accommodation which belongs to the contingent of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin?

Exchange students can apply for student accommodation during their online-registration. They will be contacted via mail after the application deadline has expired. The application deadline for student accommodation for exchange students is the 30^th of November for spring term and the 31^st of May for winter term. If you should have missed the deadline, please contact us via exchange-students@hu-berlin.de. If all rooms should already be occupied you will be put on a waiting list.

All rooms for the winter term 2023/24 are booked out.

After the application deadline has ended you will receive further information from us concerning the booking of an accommodation offer.

Places in student halls are distributed according to the Lottery principle.

You will be required to pay a reservation deposit of 800€. Only after the payment of this fee your reservation will be binding.

The minimum rental period is 6 months

for winter term: 01.09. – 28.02.
for summer term: 01.03. – 31.08.

It is not possible to shorten or change the rental period.

Please note: Since accommodation offers within the contingents of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin are very popular it is not possible to apply for a room in a specific dormitory. However, you can specify your accommodation preferences during your online application. Afterwards, we will check, whether we are able to offer you a room in the corresponding student hall residence.
