New Alexander von Humboldt-Fellow at the Faculty of Theology
Dr. Nidhin Donald, Krea University, India, has been an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Chair of Early Modern and Modern History of Christianity at the Faculty of Theology since September 2025.
His proposed project links thematically to research topics of Prof. Dr. Judith Becker who acts as host for the period of his research stay: Christian internationalism, history of missions, history of Christianity in India. During his two-year fellowship Dr. Donald will analyse postcolonial Marathi magazines (1948-2010) produced and nurtured by the East Indian Catholics of Coastal Maharashtra, India. East Indian Catholics are a multi-ethnic community born out of colonial and religious contacts with the Portuguese in the 16th century. The archive, he argues, captures complex negotiations of a 'minority' group to belong and participate in an evolving postcolonial public sphere that often stigmatized them for their 'colonial' connections.
