On the morning of 22 October, HU President Julia von Blumenthal, together with Lukas Rösli, HU Professor of Scandinavian and Medieval Studies, received the new President of the Republic of Iceland, Halla Tómasdóttir, who has only been in office since August.

Icelandic has been taught at the HU as part of the Scandinavian/Northern European Studies programme since the founding of the Department of Northern European Studies in 1994. The talks focussed on closer collaboration in the field of science and further cooperation between Germany and Iceland. There are various funding opportunities for German and Icelandic academics that support both individual exchanges and joint research projects.

"Since the founding of our Department of Northern European Studies 30 years ago, Humboldt-Universität has offered the study of Icelandic - an opportunity that is currently not available at any other university in Berlin or Brandenburg. Against this background, I was particularly pleased to welcome President Halla Tómasdóttir to the meeting and to be able to talk about future cooperation with Iceland," said HU President Julia von Blumenthal.

"The lively academic exchange between Iceland and Germany, for example in the field of Northern European and Icelandic studies, is evidence of our good relations. I was very much looking forward to visiting Humboldt-Universität to talk about our cooperation," said the Icelandic President, Halla Tómasdóttir, during her visit to HU.

The joint house of the Nordic embassies, the ‘Felleshus’, in which the five diplomatic missions work under one roof, had celebrated its 25th anniversary in Berlin the day before. At midday, Halla Tómasdóttir was ceremoniously received by Federal President Steinmeier and his wife for her inaugural visit.

Halla Tómasdóttir was elected President of the Republic of Iceland in June this year and took office in August.
