Open Humboldt Freiräume: Publication on Ukrainian refugee women's situation

The project INTERSECT, which was awarded the Open Humboldt Freiräume Prize, examined the situation of Ukrainian refugee women in Germany. The results of the research project, conducted in partnership with the Berlin University Alliance, are now available.

In Germany, women make up the majority (62 per cent) of Ukrainian refugees, and nearly half of them are caring for children. These women bring a high level of education, yet they still face significant barriers to entering the German labour market. Limited access to information and slow, standardised integration processes – particularly for single mothers and other vulnerable groups – continue to hinder their full economic participation.

INTERSECT was carried out in 2024 by two Ukrainian students: Beatriks Rabinovych, an MA student in rehabilitation sciences, and Olha Lushankina, formerly a BA student at the Institute of Social Sciences. The project was supervised by Prof Dr Gökçe Yurdakul and co-authored with Dr Jonna Rock, research associate at DeZIM.
