2. Application for an electronic residence permit (eAT)

Effective immediately, the Berlin Immigration Office will increasingly be issuing electronic residence permits.

The application for the electronic residence permit (elektronischer Aufenthaltstitel, eAT), which is issued in credit card format and includes biometric information (finger prints, body height and eye colour), will be implemented by the Higher Education Service of the Berlin Immigration Office as of 29 June 2020. A new procedure for our Visa Service has not yet been determined. Please follow our up-to-date information.

If you wish to go personally to the Berlin Immigration Office, make sure that you arrange an appointment online in good time ► eAppointment (that is not possible at the moment considering the current situation to curb the spread of the corona virus).

The following documents need to be submitted:

It may take up to 6-8 weeks to receive your electronic residence permit as it has to be produced through the Federal Printing Office (Bundesdruckerei). The costs can amount to 100 euros. (Students with scholarships and funding from public German or EU funds will keep on being excempt from the fees.)

Should the eAT need to be extended, the application process will have to be repeated as the biometric information is not saved at the Berlin Immigration Office. This is also the case should a lost eAT need to be replaced.

More information about the eAT can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge).
