Centre Marc Bloch: Postcolonial Remembrance Practices in Marseille and Berlin
In major European cities, the colonial past remains visible to this day – for example, through street names or monuments. This raises questions about how to engage with this legacy in a contemporary and appropriate way. The panel discussion "Postkoloniale Erinnerungspraktiken in Marseille und Berlin. Neue Ansätze aus Forschung und Zivilgesellschaft" offers Franco-German perspectives on this topic.
Using two initiatives from Marseille and Berlin as case studies, the event presents new approaches to a pluralistic culture of remembrance. The focus lies on the question of how – and by whom – the colonial legacy is commemorated in both cities. In Marseille, the digital platform Mars Imperium. Marseille Impériale was launched to develop innovative and sustainable formats for making the (post)colonial history of the city visible. The event will take place on 3 June at 6pm in the Tillion-Saal at the Centre Marc Bloch (Friedrichstraße 191) and will also be streamed online. Registration is required to attend.
