Students explore colonial history and cultures of remembrance
A binational workshop, organised by the Centre Marc Bloch, Humboldt-Universität and the Université Clermont Auvergne, focused on Africa’s colonial past and its (post)colonial memories in Germany and France.
Supported by the Franco-German University, the Franco-German Youth Office and other institutions, the workshop brought together 16 students from both countries from 23 February to 1 March. Its aim was to connect historical and intercultural perspectives. The concept of "renewed interculturality" was at the heart of the project. Students conducted interviews, created mind maps and analysed discourses in order to critically examine colonial history and compare European cultures of remembrance. By carrying out mini-interviews in the streets of four cities, the group was able to gather diverse perceptions on Africa’s colonisation. This was done from a Franco-German perspective and reflected a wide range of societal views.
