STIBET project for doctoral students

HU initiatives for international doctoral students as part of the DAAD STIBET doctoral student’s program 2016-2018

The Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) has been successful with their bid for the DAAD tender “STIBET Doktoranden”, bringing forward a concept for supporting international doctoral students and postdocs. Three units of the HU, the International Scholar Services (ISS), the Research Service Centre (SFZ) and the International Office jointly developed the concept, which enables the support in non-academic and generic issues. Additionally, international doctoral students have access to financial support through scholarships.

The following is a summary of the different measures made possible through the generous support of the DAAD and their funding through Federal Foreign Office means.

Support with administrative and social queries

Start-up support after your arrival

The International Scholar Services support you with regards to non-academic queries throughout your research stay, e.g. apartment hunting, dealing with authorities as well as the application for a residence permit. Apart from the consultation hours, we offer an accompanying service for appointments at the local authorities. An experienced student assistant can support you individually for example in order to overcome language barriers.

Welcome reception at the beginning of the semester

Once a year the International Scholar Services hold a central welcome event for international doctoral students, scholars and their HU hosts on behalf of the HU president Professor Sabine Kunst.

Support in generic question regarding the process of graduation and career promotion

Perspectives after graduation

Information regarding possible careers at research institutes outside the university structures have so far not been communicated well to international doctoral students. To fill this gap and inform about long-term perspectives in Germany, the Research Service Centre has launched a series of events “Perspectives after Graduation”, promoting the exchange with non-university research institutes.

Conflict Consultation

The Conflict Consultation is an offer of the Humboldt Graduate School (HGS) to all doctoral students and their hosts. Skilled mediators offer consultation in difficult situations regarding the graduation.

Financial support through scholarships

Scholarships for particularly engaged international doctoral students

Scholarships will be awarded to particularly engaged doctoral candidates of the HU who get involved with the support and integration of other international doctoral students.

Completion scholarship for international doctoral students

The funding of the DAAD enables the award of scholarships, which ensure the successful completion of the graduation in case of lacking financial resources. All international doctoral candidates being in their final stage of their thesis are eligible. In general, the scholarships are awarded for 3-5 months.
