Scholarship Funded or Private Funding

You finance your research work at the HU with a scholarship, private funding or financing from your home university?

Scholars who are not employed in Germany and who were not previously insured in a statutory health insurance in Germany or Europe will generally only be able to obtain private health insurance.

There is a variety of private health insurances and the costs and services of private health insurance vary greatly. Please note that very cheap tariffs often do not provide sufficient cover.  For example, your health insurance must be accepted as equivalent to a German statutory health insurance before you can enrol as a student or apply for a residence permit. In order to be accepted, it must cover the full cost of medical treatment in the event of acute illness or accidents in Germany. It must not exclude any services such as childbirth, and it must not be limited to a maximum amount.

Therefore you should always check which services the relevant health insurance covers.

We have compiled a range of private health insurance schemes below. Often you will find services specifically tailored to international scholars.

 Please be aware that:

  • Most health insurance providers offer different types of tariffs. Make sure you choose a suitable tariff for your stay.
  • Often the tariffs differ in terms of whether you can co-insure your family members with a less expensive tariff.
  • Many tariffs have a maximum period of insurance or to some extent they cannot be extended. Please make sure your chosen tariff coincides with your plans.
  • Many tariffs can only be concluded before (!) your entry or within the first weeks after your arrival.
